Hans J. Wegner

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) was a legendary Danish furniture designer, known as the "Master of Chairs" and a pillar of Scandinavian design.
Starting woodworking at 15, he trained at Copenhagen’s School of Arts and Crafts and later founded his own workshop, focusing on meticulous craftsmanship. Wegner’s design ethos blended natural materials, ergonomics, and simplicity, inspired by Ming and Windsor chairs. Iconic pieces like the Wishbone Chair and "The Chair" (made famous in 1960 U.S. debates) defined his style.
He also created many other remarkable works. The China Chair in 1945 absorbed the essence of Ming Dynasty chairs in China, with a unique connection between the armrest and the cushion. The Peacock Chair in 1947, with its shape resembling a peacock, showed his early exploration of bionic design. The Y-Chair, which marked the beginning of his cooperation with Carl Hansen Son in 1949, is simple and elegant. The Ox Head Chair in 1960, with a steel pipe structure and leather design, was ahead of its time.
Lauded with top honors, over 150 of his designs remain in production, cementing his legacy as a timeless design icon.

Charles Eames & Ray Kaiser Eames

Charles Eames (1907–1978) and Ray Kaiser Eames (1913–1988) were an American married couple of industrial designers. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1940 and married in 1941.
The Eames Office, which they ran for over four decades (1943–1988), made significant historical contributions to the development of modern architecture and furniture. They also worked in industrial and graphic design, fine art, and film. Their pioneering use of new materials and technologies, such as plywood and plastics, transformed the way Americans furnished their homes.
Among their most recognized designs are the Eames lounge chair and the Eames dining chair. They received many honors, including the AIA Twenty - Five Year Award in 1977, the Royal Gold Medal in 1979, and were named "the most influential designer of the 20th century" by IDSA in 1985.

Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, 1887–1965) was a Swiss-French visionary of modern architecture, urban planner, and designer whose work redefined 20th-century design globally. Co-founder of the International Style and CIAM, he articulated iconic principles like the Five Points of Architecture and the maxim “a house is a machine for living in” in his 1923 manifesto Vers une Architecture. His landmark works—including the UNESCO-listed Villa Savoye, modular Unité d’Habitation, sculptural Notre-Dame du Haut, and India’s Chandigarh Capitol Complex—pioneered the use of béton brut (raw concrete) and merged functionalism with artistic expression. Collaborating with Charlotte Perriand on iconic pieces like the LC4 Chaise Longue, Le Corbusier left an indelible legacy, celebrated for formal innovation and debated for his radical urban vision, with 17 works enshrined as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was a towering German-American modern architect and educator, ranking among the 20th century’s most influential design pioneers alongside Wright, Le Corbusier, and Gropius.
Self-taught after early stone-carving and apprenticeships, he pioneered a sleek aesthetic centered on simplicity, functionality, and innovative use of steel and glass.
Famous for “Less is more” and “God is in the details,” Mies rejected ornamentation, prioritizing structural harmony and his revolutionary “flowing space” concept.
He served as the final Bauhaus director (until 1933) before emigrating to the U.S., where he led IIT’s architecture program and shaped American design.
Iconic works like the Barcelona Pavilion, Farnsworth House, and Seagram Building defined modernism, earning him top honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
His principles remain foundational to contemporary architecture, cementing his status as a modern design legend.

Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) was a Hungarian-American modernist visionary whose work as an architect and furniture designer redefined 20th-century design. A prodigy and later master at the Bauhaus, he revolutionized furniture design with iconic pieces like the Wassily Chair—born from bicycle handlebar inspiration—and the Cesca Chair, pioneering the use of tubular steel to merge industrial innovation with aesthetic elegance. Transitioning to architecture, he became a leading exponent of the International Style and Brutalism, crafting landmarks such as New York’s Whitney Museum (now Frick Madison), Paris’ UNESCO Headquarters (collaborative work), and the IBM Research Center in France. Breuer’s legacy endures in his seamless integration of art and industry, his experimental use of materials from steel to béton brut, and his profound influence on both furniture design and architecture worldwide, cemented by honors including the AIA Gold Medal.
